MORE CONTROL OVER YOUR COSTS

How to review your monthly bills

Put recurring expenses, renewal dates and important terms in one place.

Cody Costs helps you keep an eye on costs More clarity with Cody Costs

Start with a year, not just one month

Collect statements that show regular bills and less frequent payments. Separate rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, internet, phone service and subscriptions. An annual bill can be divided by twelve for a planning figure, but keep the actual payment date in your cash-flow calendar.

Record the details beside the price

Note the provider, renewal date, promotional end date and cancellation terms. Identify what the charge includes and whether another service duplicates it. Keep device payments separate from phone service and distinguish insurance premiums from deductibles you might owe after a covered event.

Look at the largest items first

Use the cost check to see your largest entered monthly expenses. Then investigate one category at a time. A lower amount is useful only if the product still meets your needs and any change costs have been included.

Review an actual alternative

Get a written offer based on your circumstances. For internet, check the FCC’s Broadband Facts information. For insurance, match coverages, limits and deductibles. Do not cancel an essential service or coverage before you understand how the replacement will work.

Make a small review routine

Save the documents and schedule reminders for important renewal dates. Keep a record of any change and the next full bill. Your goal is a clearer picture of actual spending, not a savings claim based on a promotional headline.
