What to check before choosing
Understand the long-term commitment
Whole life is a form of permanent insurance. Traditional policies typically have a scheduled premium and cash value features. The contract sets the conditions for keeping coverage active. Ask how long payments continue and what happens if you stop. Keep that commitment in your household plan, especially when comparing it with coverage for a shorter period.
Separate guaranteed values from illustrations
Read the guaranteed values in the policy documents. If the proposal includes dividends or other non-guaranteed elements, ask the insurer to show them separately. Dividends are not promised simply because an illustration includes them. Keep the guaranteed and illustrated figures in separate columns when you prepare questions about the proposal.
Ask what access to cash value really means
Ask about surrender values, any charges and the terms of policy loans. A loan is not the same as receiving an extra death benefit. Outstanding loans and interest can affect the amount beneficiaries receive. Before using cash value, request a written explanation of the effect on both the policy and its future funding.
Keep a review folder
Save the original contract, premium schedule and later statements together. Add questions whenever a value or description is unclear. A review is easier when you can compare the current document with the original promise. For a replacement proposal, ask a qualified professional to explain the differences and any cost of leaving the existing policy.
