Personal loan costs: what goes into the price?

Compare personal loans using APR, fees, repayment length and the total amount repaid. A lower monthly payment alone does not describe the complete borrowing cost.

Key cost drivers

  • Interest and any origination fee
  • Number and size of payments
  • Other fees and the amount you actually receive

Build a complete budget

Use a written offer or the amounts on your own bill as the starting point. Separate recurring charges from one-time costs and ask which items are estimates. U.S. prices and availability vary by location, provider and the details of the product or project. A national headline price is not a quote for your circumstances.

The cost check adds up your own monthly expenses in dollars. You can also compare two monthly amounts over twelve months, including a one-time cost. The tool uses your entries rather than live market prices.

Your options for personal loan costs

Option What it means What to check
Fixed-rate loan Payments follow a fixed-rate agreement. Check the full repayment schedule and fees.
Different repayment terms The same need spread over different periods. Compare total repayment as well as the monthly amount.
Other ways to meet the need Alternatives that fit your circumstances. Assess costs and commitments before taking on debt.

What to look for before deciding

Compare the amount received and repaid

Ask how fees affect the money you receive and the payments you must make. Use the lender’s disclosures to compare APR, term and total repayment for similar loan amounts. A quoted payment should be considered together with the number of payments. Keep optional products separate unless you choose to include them.

Review the terms before applying

Check when a rate is an estimate and when it becomes an actual offer. Ask how the application or rate-check process uses your information and whether a credit inquiry is involved. Review early-repayment and late-payment provisions. Eligibility, pricing and approval depend on the lender and your circumstances.

Build a realistic payment plan

Look at your existing commitments and the reason for borrowing. A longer term may lower a payment while changing the total cost. Use actual written offers rather than a marketing example to build your comparison. HeyCosts provides planning information; it does not submit a loan application or decide what you can afford.

Your practical checklist

Keep the same information beside each offer. If a detail is missing, ask the provider to explain it in writing before deciding. Compare equivalent specifications and the same time period.

  • Loan amount and net proceeds
  • APR, term and total repayment
  • All fees and optional products
  • Application, credit-check and repayment conditions
