Whole life insurance: start with the essentials

Whole life insurance combines permanent coverage with cash value features. Understand the premium schedule, guarantees and costs before making a long-term commitment.

Use this guide to prepare questions for a U.S. insurer or a licensed insurance professional. Product availability and policy terms vary. Keep the written policy and the insurer’s explanation as the basis for a decision.

Your options at a glance

Feature Meaning Question to ask
Scheduled premium Payments follow the contract’s structure. Payment period and missed-payment rules.
Cash value Values develop within the policy. Guaranteed schedule and surrender amount.
Participating policy May pay dividends. Dividends are not guaranteed.

What to check before choosing

Understand the long-term commitment

Whole life is a form of permanent insurance. Traditional policies typically have a scheduled premium and cash value features. The contract sets the conditions for keeping coverage active. Ask how long payments continue and what happens if you stop. Keep that commitment in your household plan, especially when comparing it with coverage for a shorter period.

Separate guaranteed values from illustrations

Read the guaranteed values in the policy documents. If the proposal includes dividends or other non-guaranteed elements, ask the insurer to show them separately. Dividends are not promised simply because an illustration includes them. Keep the guaranteed and illustrated figures in separate columns when you prepare questions about the proposal.

Ask what access to cash value really means

Ask about surrender values, any charges and the terms of policy loans. A loan is not the same as receiving an extra death benefit. Outstanding loans and interest can affect the amount beneficiaries receive. Before using cash value, request a written explanation of the effect on both the policy and its future funding.

Keep a review folder

Save the original contract, premium schedule and later statements together. Add questions whenever a value or description is unclear. A review is easier when you can compare the current document with the original promise. For a replacement proposal, ask a qualified professional to explain the differences and any cost of leaving the existing policy.

Frequently asked questions

Are whole life dividends guaranteed?+

No. If a participating policy illustrates dividends, ask which values are guaranteed separately from those assumptions.

Is cash value the same as the death benefit?+

No. They are different policy features. Ask the insurer how surrender, withdrawals or loans would affect the contract and the benefit.
